Don’t Blow It! Why Brewery Grain Dust is a Serious Hazard and How to Clean Safely

Why You Must Stop Blowing and Sweeping Dust
The biggest mistake in dust control is using blowers or brooms.
- Blowing: A blower’s air current lifts dust off surfaces and keeps it suspended, allowing fine particles to float and travel throughout the entire building.
- Sweeping: Broom sweeping also kicks the dust back up into the air.
The Goal: To trap and capture dust, not disperse it. The most hazardous particles—10 microns and smaller—are so light they can remain airborne for a long time, posing an inhalation risk to everyone in the facility.
The Right Way to Clean: HEPA Vacuums
Instead of blowing or sweeping, use vacuums. Vacuums don’t transport the dust into the air, they trap and contain it.
Key Cleaning Tools
- HEPA Filtration: To effectively contain tiny grain dust particles, you need a vacuum with a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter. A true HEPA filter captures 99.97% of contaminants as small as 0.3 microns.
- HEPA Equivalent Bag: The dust must be collected into a suitable bag for safe removal and disposal.
- Static Safety: Ensure your vacuum system includes static dissipation features to prevent an ignition source—a vital safety measure for combustible grain dust.
An Alternative: Water Wash-Down
Water can hold dust down, but use caution.
- Accidental Control: Breweries often wash down the tops of mash tuns and fermenters. The water carries the dust away because there’s unobstructed access to the surface.
- The Risk: Be careful when starting a wash-down, as the initial spray can temporarily lift and aerosolize the dry dust before it gets wet. Never use water spray to clean grain mills as it can damage the equipment.
The Danger Lurking in Grain Dust
Grain dust is a cocktail of hazardous, non-grain components that settle in your lungs. These can include:
- Fungi and mold
- Weeds, pollens, and hairs
- Rodent and insect debris (and their droppings)
- Pesticide and chemical residues
- Silica from soil (which can be a serious long-term lung hazard)
Particle Size Matters
The small size of the particles makes them dangerous.
- Inhaleable Dust: Particles 10 microns or smaller are called “inhaleable” or “respirable” dust.
- Most Dangerous: Particles 5 microns or less are invisible to the naked eye. They can bypass your nose hairs (your body’s natural filter), travel deep into the lungs, and even enter the bloodstream, blocking oxygen and carbon dioxide transfer.
✅ Preventing Exposure and Cleaning Your Tools
The best defense is to stop the dust from getting into the air at the source.
- Source Control: Contain the dust cloud immediately at the grain mill opening to prevent it from dispersing and moving toward the worker’s breathing zone. Once it starts to disperse, control is lost, and it can travel throughout the building.
- Clean Your Vacuum: Grain dust can cake on the inside of vacuum hoses and accessories. Water clean-up is critical for these parts. Disassemble the hoses and accessories, and spray the insides clean with a water and light soap mixture. A soap film can help prevent the next layer of dust from sticking, making future clean-up easier.
