Phantom Canyon Brewing Company opened our doors in 1993 and are the oldest brewing company in Colorado Springs. Our founders are the same entrepreneurs that started Wynkoop Brewing Company in Denver.
Our location, the Cheyenne building, was originally an office building serving the western terminus of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, the second and third stories of this building contained sleeping rooms to house railroad company agents. From 1909 to 1963 it was used as a hotel focusing on the business traveler and tourists who preferred accommodations less lavish than the Antlers or Acacia Park hotels.
Sporadically used through the 1970’s and 1980’s, the building was slated for demolition in 1990 to provide yet another parking lot. The building’s demise was stalled by the City’s first use of its Historic Preservation Overlay Zone. Wynkoop Brewing Company purchased the building in 1991, restored it and opened the Phantom Canyon Brewing Company brewpub in 1993.
Over the 22 years of our operation we have had a number of brewers. Alan Stiles is our head brewer and has been brewing beer commercially since 1996. He, Mike Hall and Troy Johnson produce and maintain the high quality of our flagship beers. In addition to the flagship beers our brewers have the freedom to produce seasonal and one-off creations. This ability to produce many specialty beers keeps our customers interested in what new creation they will find on their next visit. We usually have 13 of our own beers on tap and six guest beers.
In 2013 we built an addition to accommodate increased demand for our beer as well as allow us to age our beers properly and start brewing lagers (they take longer to brew). It also allowed for a beautiful roof top patio.
